Woodland goldenrod is a clump forming perennial that brings a bright splash of gold to the garden from late summer through autumn, typically reaching a height of 3 to 4 feet. Known by its smooth, arching stems and wide, sharply toothed lower leaves, this species thrives in full sun to part shade and is highly adaptable to dry, rocky, or well drained loamy soils, making it a less aggressive alternative to other goldenrods. While not a primary culinary plant, the leaves and flowers can be steeped to make a mild tea. In the garden, woodland goldenrod is best positioned in a pollinator border or along a woodland edge, where its nectar rich, fountain of blooms serve as a late season refueling station for migrating monarch butterflies and native bees.
