Thimbleweed is a perennial reaching 2 to 3 feet tall. At home in dry woods and rocky slopes, it thrives in part shade to full sun and prefers average to rocky soils, making it exceptionally drought-tolerant. In habitat its early-summer blooms provide a vital pollen source for halictid bees and syrphid flies, while its distinctive thimble-shaped seed heads which burst into a cottony fluff in late fall are used by Chickadees and Tufted Titmice for nesting material.
