Northern Bush Honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera)

Northern bush honeysuckle is a rugged, mounded shrub reaching 2 to 4 feet that features bronzy foliag that deepen to red in autumn and yellow trumpet flowers. It is a champion of "tough spots," thriving in full sun to part shade and handling dry, rocky, or sandy soils with ease, spreading steadily via underground rhizomes to form a dense, low growing thicket. In the garden it is a top dog for native low maintenance groundcover for stabilizing slopes or filling dry gaps where its nectar-rich blooms can support bumblebees and clearwing moths.
