A quintessential anchor of the pollinator garden, Common Milkweed is a robust native perennial reaching 3 to 5 feet, easily noticed by its broad, velvety leaves and clusters of very fragrant, dusty pink blooms. This sun loving powerhouse is the primary larval host plant for the Monarch butterfly and a high traffic nectar hub for a vast array of bees, hummingbirds, and beneficial insects from mid to late summer. Exceptionally hardy and drought tolerant once established, its deep taproot makes it a structural cornerstone for large scale meadows or dedicated wildlife sanctuaries where it can naturalize and provide essential ecosystem services.
While primarily known as a wildlife powerhouse, Common Milkweed also has a rich history as a gourmet wild edible, with its young shoots, tender flower buds, and immature seed pods offering a unique, asparagus-like flavor when properly prepared and blanched.
