American bittersweet is a vigorous, woody twining vine reaching 15 to 20 feet in length, known for its smooth, ovate leaves and spectacular display of orange-to-scarlet seed capsules that split open in the fall. A specialist of thickets and woodland edges, it thrives in full to part sun and can tolerate a wide range of conditions once established. Its late spring greenish yellow flowers provide nectar for bees, while its persistent autumn berries are a late-winter food for eastern bluebirds, turkeys, and squirrels. It also serves as a host plant for the saddleback caterpillar. Because the colorful, waxy berries and stems are highly sought after for wreaths and floral arrangements, they are frequently harvested in late fall. It is best to have this climbing something sturdy.
